ATLANTA (July 9, 2019) – In the 2019 NLL Expansion Draft for the New York Riptide and Rochester Knighthawks, Georgia Swarm forward Holden Cattoni was selected by the Knighthawks, and defenseman John Ranagan was picked by the Riptide. Both players were picked in the second round of the draft, Cattoni No. 3 overall and Ranagan No. 4 overall.
“It’s never easy losing players that were as integral to the Swarm’s success last season like Holden and John were,” Swarm Owner and General Manager John Arlotta said. “However, we know that they will be leaders on their new teams and help both teams be very competitive in their first seasons. We want to thank Holden and John for their contributions to the Swarm and will cherish the time we had with them.”
Cattoni, 24, was acquired by the Swarm during the 2018 NLL Entry Draft in a trade with the Calgary Roughnecks. In his third NLL season, the DeWinton, Alberta native played in all 18 regular season games, recorded 80 points (27G, 53A), and collected 59 loose balls, setting new career-highs in points, assists, and loose balls. In the Swarm’s postseason contest, Cattoni posted five points (2G, 3A).
Ranagan, 28, signed with the Swarm right before the 2017 NLL season began. He made an immediate impact in the back end and helped the Swarm win their first NLL Cup in 2017. In 49 games in blue and yellow, the Johns Hopkins University alum posted 21 points (9G, 12A), collected 136 loose balls, and caused 31 turnovers. In five postseason games, Ranagan handed out an assist to go with 13 loose balls and a caused turnover.
