Gwinnett County Awarded as Regional Host for 2016 Football University National Championship
ROCKAWAY, NJ (September 26, 2016) – The Football University (FBU) National Championship tournament has awarded Gwinnett County as a host for the Southeast Region for the 2016 national tournament. Beginning December 2, Gwinnett County will play host to the first three rounds of the FBU National Championship tournament, with 48 youth all-star teams vying for the title of National Champion.
The Gwinnett Sports Commission (GSC) is the Southeast Region’s host national sponsor of the 2016 FBU National Championship. Gwinnett County is home to several state-of-the-art sports facilities and nationally acclaimed complexes, and possesses numerous familial attractions in nearby Atlanta.
This year’s tournament continues the biggest youth football event to date, with 192 teams nationwide, including more than 250 games, 6,000 athletes, and 1,200 coaches. In the aggregate, the tournament will showcase a total of 250 games in eight days, resulting in more than 1,000 hours of play.
The Gwinnett Football League (GFL-GA) has been one of the most consistently dominant teams in the FBU National Championship, having won back-to-back 8th-grade titles from 2012-2013.
Entering its fifth year, the FBU National Championship has been likened to a mash-up of the NCAA basketball tournament and the Little League World Series, and is considered the tournament that crowns the true National Champions in youth football. The single-elimination tournament features 64 teams from more than 30 states across the U.S. in three brackets – 6th, 7th and 8th grade – comprised of the top 30 athletes from each area.
“We are really looking forward to working with FBU on this special event. Our goal is to always partner with quality organizations and events, and FBU/All American Games™ is the epitome of that type of partnership. We could not be more thrilled,” said Stan Hall, executive director of the Gwinnett Sports Commission.
The first three rounds of the tournament will take place across four regional locales – Midwest, West, South and East – from December 2-5. The tournament concludes with Championship Weekend, set for December 17-20 in Naples, FL, for the final eight teams in each of the three brackets.
“We are thrilled Gwinnett County is the Southeast Region host,” said Douglas Berman, Chairman of All American Games. “We know that our athletes and their families will have an amazing time there, and the facilities and venues available are world-class.”
