LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Tossing seven scoreless innings has earned Georgia Gwinnett College senior Jonathan McKinney recognition as the Association of Independent Institutions’ Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

The right hander recorded eight strikeouts in seven scoreless innings last Saturday as the No. 7-ranked Grizzlies defeated No. 18 Lyon College (Ark.) 11-2. He scattered three hits in the strong pitching performance.

His victory changed the momentum of the series as Lyon had scored eight runs in the ninth inning to win Friday’s opener of the three-game series. McKinney’s effort, along with other GGC pitchers, would hold the Scots to score just two runs over the final 18 innings to win the series – the sixth straight series victory of the 2019 season.

McKinney has a 4-2 record with a 3.97 earned run average on the season. He ranks second on the team with 50 strikeouts across 45.1 innings.

GGC stands 23-8 on the season after winning six of its last seven games. The team is scheduled to travel to Reinhardt University (Ga.) for two games on Tuesday, March 26. The first game is the resumption of a Feb. 20 suspended game, with the Grizzlies leading 5-4 in the eighth inning. Then, the two teams will play a single nine-inning game. The road trip continues this weekend with a three-game series March 29-30 at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla.
