LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The wins continue to pile up for the top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men’s tennis team, with the latest triumph being an 8-1 home victory against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Tuesday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility.
GGC (12-0) has won 94 consecutive matches, the longest active winning streak in all of intercollegiate athletics.
For the second straight day the Grizzlies jumped out to a 3-0 lead following strong play in doubles. The team of senior Ayed Zatar and sophomore Federico Bonacia earned an 8-3 victory in their pairing of the spring season on the No. 1 doubles court. Senior Rafael Coutinho and sophomore Valentino Caratini won eight of the nine games at No. 2 doubles, while an 8-1 win by junior Federico Herrera Duran and freshman Jose Dugo gave the hosts a 3-0 advantage over an opponent that received votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll.
In singles, junior Mika Kosonen won all 12 games on the No. 6 court for the team’s fourth point of the match. Bonacia followed with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph to capture the clinching point. Then, Coutinho earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory on the No. 3 court.
Caratini won 12 of the 15 games played at No. 5 singles before Dugo won by identical 6-3 set scores on the No. 4 court to round out the Grizzlies’ winners.
