NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Georgia Gwinnett College men’s tennis team has a doubles squad in the finals and has players still battling for the singles crown at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Regional in New Orleans.
The top-seeded team of juniors Federico Bonacia and Valentino Caratini have advanced to Sunday’s championship round after defeating Joe Klokow and Patrick Tobacco from Point University (Ga.) by an 8-3 score in the semifinals. They will now face Daniil Klimov and Dominik Fritsche of William Carey University (Miss.) for the regional title.
Meanwhile, sophomore Daniel Czepielewski pulled off an upset in singles play with a victory against senior teammate Federico Herrera Duran in the Round of 16. Then, he defeated Klimov 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the quarterfinals of Saturday’s action, which was impacted by rainy weather conditions.
Czepielewski is among three Grizzlies who have advanced to Sunday’s singles semifinals.
Sophomore Jose Dugo defeated Juan Batalla of Xavier University (La.) 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. This sets up a match against Czepielewski in the semifinals.
Bonacia had a pair of straight-set victories on Saturday: a 6-2, 6-2 win against senior teammate Sergio Valinotti and a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Xavier’s Samir Chikhaoui. He now will face No. 2-seeded Santiago Perez from Xavier in the semifinals.
The GGC doubles team of senior Gregor Hutterer and Dugo lost 8-6 in the semifinal round.
ITA South Regional singles and doubles champions and alternates will advance to NAIA individual championships at the ITA Oracle Cup, Oct. 17-20 at Rome, Ga
