LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men’s tennis team completed an undefeated spring season with a 7-2 home victory against No. 2 Reinhardt University (Ga.) in the program’s Senior Day match Tuesday afternoon.
Strong doubles play gave the Grizzlies (23-0) an early 3-0 lead. The tandem of junior Federico Herrera Duran and freshman Daniel Czepielewski won all eight games on the No. 3 court for the first doubles point.
Senior Rafael Coutinho and sophomore Valentino Caratini earned an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, while senior Ayed Zatar and sophomore Federico Bonacia had an 8-3 win at the top of the doubles lineup.
In singles, a retirement at No. 2 singles and Caratini’s 6-3, 6-0 win on the No. 4 court clinched the team victory.
Other victories were registered by junior Mika Kosonen, with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, and Herrera Duran, who won a pair of tiebreakers to win in straight sets on the No. 1 court.
GGC, which has won 105 straight matches, now sets its sights to the 2019 NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championships in Mobile, Ala., from May 15-19.
Coach’s Corner
“[Seniors] Rafael and Ayed have been two leaders for us all season. Once again, both of them did a really good job in helping us get out to a 3-0 lead. I have a lot of respect for the careers they have had for us,” said Head Coach Chase Hodges.
