LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia Gwinnett College junior pitcher Pedro Garcia had 13 strikeouts and the offense again shined as the No. 4-ranked Grizzlies picked up an 11-1 eight-inning victory against William Carey University (Miss.) on Wednesday to sweep the midweek series at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
Garcia’s 13 strikeouts were the most recorded by a GGC pitcher in a game this season. The right hander also scattered five hits across six innings to improve to 3-1 for 2019.
Offensively, the Grizzlies (33-8) used a pair of four-run innings and had five players record two or more hits in the victory – the team’s 11th straight win. One of those big innings came in the opening frame when sophomore Livingston Morris brought home a pair of runs with a double.
Senior Onassis Matos hit a two-run single as the hosts built a 9-1 lead after the fifth inning behind another four-run inning.
GGC collected 14 hits in the game, led by sophomore Cam Coursey with three hits from the leadoff spot in the batting order. Sophomore Cord Johnson, freshman Ali LaPread, Matos and Morris also chipped in with two hits apeice.
Turning Point
The Grizzlies took any drama out of the contest early with four first-inning runs. Sophomore Livingston Morris lined a two-run double to bring home the third and fourth runs of the opening frame.
