LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Rehabbing Atlanta Braves’ right-hander Mike Foltynewicz pitched 5.0 no-hit innings, leading the Gwinnett Stripers (1-0) to a 3-1 win over the Norfolk Tides (0-1) on Thursday night at Coolray Field.

Scoring Recap: Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Adam Duvall scoring Rafael Ortega. In the third, Luis Marte led off with a single and scored on a double play groundout from Austin Riley to make it 2-0 Stripers. Ortega raised the lead to 3-0 in the fifth with a solo home run (1) off Tides’ left-hander Josh Rogers (L, 0-1). Norfolk’s lone run came in the ninth on an RBI single by Ryan Mountcastle off left-hander Thomas Burrows.

Stripers Standouts: Foltynewicz (W, 1-0), making his first start with Gwinnett since 2016, allowed just two walks and struck out two over 5.0 scoreless, hitless innings. He threw 56 pitches, 34 for strikes. Ortega had three of Gwinnett’s seven hits, going 3-for-4 with a double, homer, and RBI. Burrows (S, 1) earned a save in his Triple-A debut, yielding a run on two hits over 1.0 inning.

Quote: “The strikeouts weren’t really there, but it was all about just getting comfortable out there tonight,” said Foltynewicz. “I just felt really comfortable. I got ground ball outs, a couple walks here and there, but it was kind of getting the rhythm down, getting my mechanics down. Arm-wise, everything else felt good.”

Postgame Notes: The Stripers drew 5,179 fans for their largest Opening Night crowd since 2015. Foltynewicz’s win was the third of his career with Gwinnett, first since April 13, 2016 at Durham.
