LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia Gwinnett College men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to 98 consecutive matches with two match victories against NCAA Division II University of Montevallo (Ala.) on Sunday at the GGC Tennis Facility.

The NAIA No. 1-ranked Grizzlies (16-0) earned a 7-0 victory in the morning match before registering a 4-0 triumph during the afternoon.

The No. 1 doubles team of senior Ayed Zatar and sophomore Federico Bonacia secured the doubles point in the first match with a 6-4 win. GGC and Montevallo split matches on the second and third courts. Junior Federico Herrera Duran and freshman Daniel Czepielewski was victorious 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

The Grizzlies swept the six singles matches in the first match of the day. Sophomore Valentino Caratini won by identical 6-1 set scores to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. Junior Mika Kosonen also was victorious by 6-1, 6-1 scores on the No. 5 court. Zatar clinched the team victory by winning 12 of 14 games at No. 6 singles.

Freshman Jose Dugo earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Tanguy David on the No. 4 court. Bonacia picked up a straight-set win at No. 2 singles before Herrera Duran won a third-set tiebreaker 10-4 to round out the winners.

In the afternoon, the Grizzlies won on all three doubles courts to grab a 1-0 lead in the match. The Zatar-Caratini team won six of seven games at the top of the doubles lineup. They once again clinched the only doubles point of the match after senior Rafael Coutinho and Caratini was victorious 6-3 on the No. 2 court. Herrera Duran and Dugo registered a 6-4 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

GGC took a 2-0 lead after Kosonen won by identical 6-1 set scores. Bonacia won 12 of 14 games on the No. 1 court for the team’s third point of the match. Then, Dugo clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles.

Georgia Gwinnett College’s streak of 98 consecutive match victories is the longest active in all of intercollegiate athletics.
